Backtest a Trading Strategy in Plain English: Platforms Compared
Aman Anand
Short answer: Platforms that let you backtest a trading strategy described in plain English include Composer, TrendSpider, Capitalise.ai, Stratest, BacktestLoop, Backtrex, CoinQuant and Pineify, plus Nvestiq in early access. They differ in one way that decides whether you can trust the result: some have an AI write code you must check, some map your words into rules you can inspect, and Nvestiq compiles your description into exact, fixed logic.
Last updated October 2026. Nvestiq publishes this page, so weigh it accordingly. Competitor details come from each vendor's own site as of October 2026.
Three ways plain English becomes a backtest
A backtest is evidence about the rule that ran, not the rule you meant. If the software misreads "crosses above" as "is above", the result answers a question you never asked. So first ask how a tool turns your sentence into logic. There are three approaches; the AI trading software market labels all of them "AI".
(a) A language model writes code from your prompt. The tool hands your description to a large language model, which writes Python or Pine Script. It is flexible, but language models are probabilistic: the same prompt can produce different code on different runs, and a misread rule can look perfectly reasonable. The only real check is reading the code. BacktestLoop, Pineify and general chatbots work this way.
(b) AI maps your words into a fixed rule builder. The AI translates your sentence into conditions or visual blocks from a fixed menu that you inspect before testing. That is easier to audit than raw code, but the AI can still pick the wrong block, and you are limited to what the builder can express. TrendSpider's human language input, Backtrex and Composer's Create with AI fall here.
(c) A deterministic compiler turns the description into exact logic. AI interprets your description, but a fixed compiler produces the strategy, so the same description always gives the same logic and nothing is freeform model output. This is how Nvestiq works. The tradeoff is that you can only express what the compiler supports.
Where a vendor does not document its approach, we say so rather than guess.

Composer
Composer is a no-code investing platform with its own brokerage for US stocks and ETFs, and its help center lists 22 tradable cryptocurrencies. With its Create with AI tool you describe what you want and the AI builds a strategy (a "symphony") that you can backtest, then edit in the visual editor. Its help center says the model is GPT-4 fine tuned on trading use cases.
Because the output lands as blocks, you can read every condition before trusting the backtest. Composer is strongest for portfolio strategies such as ETF rotations, and it beats Nvestiq today on availability and a built in brokerage. As of October 2026 Starter is $0 with unlimited backtesting, Advanced $10 a month and Pro $32. See Nvestiq vs Composer.
Good fit if you want AI drafted stock, ETF or crypto portfolios you can inspect as blocks and run live in the same app. Composer pricing.
TrendSpider
TrendSpider is a charting and research suite with a Strategy Tester and trading bots. Its help center says human language input is "automatically converted into a structured condition which will be identical to what one could build via our visual editor." Its AI coding assistant writes custom indicator code, closer to category (a).
The backtester is mature, with multi symbol, variance and forward testing. Bots route to 30+ brokers and exchanges through SignalStack, far broader coverage than Nvestiq. Human language input does not support indicators you created or subscribed to. As of October 2026 there is no free plan; Standard is listed at $59 to $89 a month depending on billing, with a 14 day trial for $19. See Nvestiq vs TrendSpider.
Good fit if your strategy is chart based and you want AI help building conditions inside a full research platform. TrendSpider pricing.
Capitalise.ai
Capitalise.ai, which its site says is now part of Kraken, lets you "automate any trading strategy using everyday English." Strategies read as sentences, such as "Close position at trailing take profit (10%, 3%)", and the homepage lists backtesting and simulated trading. Its examples span stocks, forex, crypto, commodities, indices and news events.
Capitalise.ai does not document how a sentence becomes executable logic, so check the trade list against what you wrote. It is ahead of Nvestiq in being live now, and the site says it is free through partner brokers and exchanges. No paid plans are listed as of October 2026. See Nvestiq vs Capitalise.ai.
Good fit if your broker already offers Capitalise.ai and you want to automate rule based trades written as sentences. Capitalise.ai.
Stratest
Stratest's headline is "Describe a strategy in plain English. Find out what it actually did." Per its site, your description becomes a structured spec, the spec generates code, and the code is validated before running with commission, slippage and a buy and hold benchmark.
Stratest does not say whether the same description always yields the same code, so it sits between (a) and (c). Its standout is statistical scrutiny (significance tests, walk-forward analysis, Monte Carlo simulation), deeper robustness testing than most tools here document. It covers 103 assets, with paper trading on Pro but no live order routing described. As of October 2026: a free plan with 10 backtests a month, Pro at $24.95 a month and Max at $39.
Good fit if you mainly want to stress test an idea statistically rather than trade it automatically. Stratest.
BacktestLoop
BacktestLoop is openly a category (a) tool: "The AI agent turns your idea into real, editable Backtrader or VectorBT Python." You review the code, then it runs in the cloud on Databento data across US stocks, crypto, futures and forex.
You get standard Python you can audit and take elsewhere, and it covers futures today, which Nvestiq does not yet. But you need to read Python to confirm the AI understood you. Paper trading uses virtual funds; there is no real money trading. As of October 2026 it is free with 15 one time starter credits, then $7.99 a month (Starter) up to $199.99 (Ultra).
Good fit if you can read Python and want AI to write the first draft of a Backtrader or VectorBT backtest. BacktestLoop.
Backtrex
Backtrex reads plain English sentences or pasted Pine Script, lays the strategy out as blocks and shows what it understood. Rules taken from code are tagged "Exact" and rules inferred from your wording are tagged "Inferred", so you can uncheck anything wrong before testing. That labeling is a useful honesty feature.
It covers 17 assets across forex, indices, crypto and commodities, with no stocks listed. There is no live execution; you export Pine Script to TradingView. As of October 2026 it sells one time lifetime licenses: Pro at $129.83 including tax at the current launch stage and Max at $315.30, plus a free account to try it.
Good fit if you trade forex or gold intraday and want to see which rules were inferred before trusting a result. Backtrex pricing.
CoinQuant
CoinQuant says you can "type or speak your strategy in plain English," and the AI returns a full setup with entries, exits, position sizing, filters and risk rules that you refine by chat. The underlying method is not documented. Backtests run on tick data with fees and slippage.
It is crypto first (Binance, Bybit, OKX, Coinbase, Hyperliquid), with Interactive Brokers also listed. Live automation is an invite only beta. For crypto traders, tick data is a real advantage. As of October 2026 pricing starts at $39.99 a month for Pro (free trial offered), and tick level backtests require Elite at $220 a month.
Good fit if you trade crypto on major exchanges and want tick level backtests from a chat description. CoinQuant pricing.
Pineify
Pineify is a category (a) tool for TradingView users. The AI turns your description into Pine Script v6, checks that it compiles, and you run the backtest in TradingView.
Compiling means the script runs, not that it does what you meant, so read the conditions. As of October 2026 Pineify sells one time purchases: a limited free builder, then Plus at $99, Advanced at $149 and Expert at $259.
Good fit if you already backtest in TradingView and can review the Pine Script it drafts. Pineify plans.
Nvestiq
Nvestiq is the category (c) option, and the publisher of this page. The AI interprets your description, but the trading logic is produced by a deterministic strategy compiler and is never freeform code written by a language model, so the same description always gives the same strategy, and the logic is checked against what you described. The report (What it made, What it cost to hold, Whether to believe it) shows returns, holding costs, a 0 to 100 Nvestiq score and a buy and hold comparison that flags when buy and hold beat your strategy.
The same compiled strategy that ran the backtest runs live, on paper trading first and then Interactive Brokers, and you confirm by typing the ticker before any live order routes. You can export to Python (.py), Pine Script (.pine) or JSON. Where others are ahead: Nvestiq is in early access with public launch after final legal review, TrendSpider and Capitalise.ai reach more brokers, and Stratest and CoinQuant document Monte Carlo testing and tick data. A free tier is planned; paid pricing is published at launch.
Good fit if you can describe your rules but do not want to code, and you want the logic you tested to be exactly the logic that trades. Join the Nvestiq waitlist.
Using ChatGPT or Claude to write the backtest yourself
A general chatbot can write a Python or Pine Script backtest from your description. This is category (a) in its purest form: no rule builder, no built in data, and nothing checks that the code matches what you meant. Ask twice and you may get two different implementations.
It works if you can read code. Watch for silent errors: filling at the close of the bar that generated the signal (lookahead), off by one indexing, missing costs, and exits that never fire. Ask it to restate each rule next to the line of code that implements it. If you would rather not read code, see our guide to no-code backtesting.
How to check that the backtest matches what you meant
Read the logic, not the summary. Compare the blocks, code or rules to your sentence, especially "and" versus "or", "above" versus "crosses above", and the timeframe.
Spot check five trades on a chart. Confirm each entry and exit condition was really true on that bar.
Run the same description twice. With category (a) tools, regenerate and compare. If the versions differ, at least one is not what you meant.
Check costs and fill timing. Confirm commissions and slippage are on, and whether orders fill at the signal bar's close or the next bar's open.
Compare against buy and hold. A strategy that trails simply holding the asset needs a strong reason to exist.
Frequently Asked Questions
What platforms let me backtest trading strategies using natural language?
As of October 2026, Composer, TrendSpider, Capitalise.ai, Stratest, BacktestLoop, Backtrex, CoinQuant and Pineify accept plain English strategy descriptions, and Nvestiq does in early access. They differ in whether AI writes code, maps your words to a rule builder, or compiles them deterministically.
Can ChatGPT backtest a trading strategy?
ChatGPT can write Python or Pine Script backtest code from your description, but you supply the data, run it and check it implements your rules. The same prompt can produce different code, and errors like lookahead bias can be silent.
Is AI generated trading code reliable for backtesting?
It can be correct, but you cannot assume it is. A language model can misread a rule and still produce code that runs, so a clean backtest does not show the logic matches your idea. Read the code and spot check trades.
What is the difference between an AI code generator and a strategy compiler?
An AI code generator asks a language model to write the strategy, so output can vary between runs. A deterministic strategy compiler, like the one Nvestiq uses, turns the description into exact, fixed logic, so the same description always produces the same strategy.
Which natural language backtesting tool is free?
As of October 2026, Composer's Starter plan is $0, Stratest's free plan includes 10 backtests a month, BacktestLoop gives 15 free credits, and Capitalise.ai says it is free through partner brokers. Nvestiq plans a free tier.
Can I trade live with a strategy I described in plain English?
Yes, on some platforms. Composer, Capitalise.ai and TrendSpider support live trading today, and CoinQuant offers it as an invite only beta. Nvestiq runs the same compiled strategy on paper trading, then Interactive Brokers.
Is Nvestiq available now?
Nvestiq is in early access, with public launch following final legal review. You can join the waitlist at nvestiq.com.
